Co-op Mulled Wine
A simple and flexible recipe. Adjust to your taste and preferences.
- 1 bottle red wine
- We prefer a fruit-forward un-oaked or lightly oaked red blend, but you can also use a merlot, zinfandel, tempranillo, or cabernet sauvignon.
- ¼ – ⅓ c. Calvados brandy
- You can substitute cider, juice (apple, orange, or cranberry), or even water.
- Citrus fruit (sliced)
- Use 1-2 oranges, lemons, clementines, or a combination. You may also include additional citrus rind.
- Whole Spices
- Use 2-3 cinnamon sticks and one or more of the following: 2-3 star anise, 3-4 cloves, 2-3 cardamom pods, 5-7 allspice berries, 1-2 bay leaves, or 5-7 peppercorns
- Sugar or sweetener
- Start with the equivalent of ¼ c. cane sugar. Honey, brown sugar, or alternative sweeteners can also be used.
- Dried fruit (optional)
- ¼ – ½ c. cranberries, cherries, raisins, or a combination
Combine all ingredients except the brandy in a heavy bottomed saucepan or Dutch oven. Heat slowly over low heat. To avoid bitterness, do not allow the mixture to boil or simmer. Bring to the point of steaming and maintain for approximately 10 minutes. Stir occasionally. Serve in mugs. Garnish with whole spices and sliced citrus fruit.
